About:

The UN World Commission on Environment and Development in 1987 defined sustainability as "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs." Through a systematic review of the available literature, we explored how businesses define and describe what sustainability means for them. This research finds a transition to a sustainable economy is critical for the economic survival of all businesses. It is therefore imperative that TUDublin's Accounting & Finance graduates, entering the business world, are aware of this transition to sustainable business and the key role accountants play in assessing and disclosing sustainability risk.

As a result of these findings, a TU Dublin FinBiz Sustainability webinar was held for staff and students. Four expert speakers gave informative talks on 'What is Sustainability?' the impact Sustainability has on businesses, Sustainable reporting and future trends. Students were then asked to write a reflective piece based on the webinar and complete the sustainability literacy test (SULITEST).

The SULITEST assesses the minimum level of knowledge in economic, social and environmental responsibility, applicable all over the world, in any kind of higher education institution.

Given the importance of this unfolding environment, we explored the integration of Sustainability into TUDublin 's curriculum. The research showed that Sustainability is not only seen as a standalone module but a topic that is becoming embedded in all modules. The lecturers surveyed are now tailoring learning and pedagogical initiatives to raise awareness on the scope of the Sustainability Development Goals.
